When we talk about disability in the world, we don’t always want it to be a negative story. There
are many industries and job roles where people with disabilities can thrive due to various
accommodations and support. The tech industry is one such example, and the more we’ve
explored the industry, the more that we find tech is actually a very inclusive industry and we
think that people can learn a lot from the tech industry and how it makes accommodations for
disabled people.
One thing about the tech industry is that a lot of jobs don’t require someone to go to an office to
do their work. If you’re on an IT helpdesk, then you can do things remotely, which means that
disabled people can work from the comfort of their own homes with minimal issues. Remote
access tools are a thing, and for anyone who has mobility issues, this is a goldmine because
they can work at home, and access computers remotely to solve problems and resolve
helpdesk tickets.
Tech jobs are often done using devices and tools which are more inclusive than you think.
People who require a wheelchair to move, for example, can still use a keyboard and work a 9-5
without having to perform manual labor tasks or be particularly mobile.
When we get right into it, the tech world is actually surprisingly inclusive of people with
disabilities and there are a lot of other industries which could actually learn a lot from them.
They offer up a few key ideas and concepts which we feel could be implemented in a lot of
different places.
First of all, a lot more job roles could stand to be remote, and be able to work remotely. A lot of
positions are making slow changes to get to this, but things like lecturing, accountancy or even
legal aid could all be done remotely thanks to the power of modern technology.
Furthermore, anywhere which does require someone to come into the office should be focused
heavily on making accommodations to ensure that someone who does have a disability can
work in a way which is healthy for them and encourages them to do their best. We live in a
world where so many things are possible so there is absolutely no reason why this can’t take
place.
The technology world, specifically that of IT and remote access support, is a good example of
how someone doesn’t need to be particularly mobile or even physically capable to perform well.
It is a very inclusive industry which does pretty well, and we can all take inspiration from that.
The world of business needs to make accomodation for the up and coming talent, regardless of
their physical limitations, because these are the people who have the power to revolutionize the
industry, and if we don’t give them the support that they deserve and should be entitled to, how
do we expect to grow?
