When you think about the modern building, what sort of design philosophy comes to mind? If the answer isn’t accessibility, then there is possibly something wrong. However, for a growing number of people, modern building designs are an important stepping stone for designing the inclusive spaces of tomorrow. After all, this is 2023, so we have reached a point where it’s totally unacceptable to not be making accessible building designs. After all, it’s definitely important for how we look at disabled people as a whole, and the implications of building designs moving forward.
A lot of older buildings suffer from the same basic problem in that they were not designed for people with disabilities. They have corridors and doorways which were not built for mobility aids, and as a result, a lot of people struggle to navigate them. These buildings are on the way out, and privately owned buildings are usually scheduled to be replaced with modern builds, but public access buildings may take a little while longer. Obviously, what’s important is that the new building is designed to be much more friendly for people with disabilities, which means having wider doorways, bigger corridors, and things like elevators wherever possible.
This is, understandably, a process. It’s important that we think about the way that we are dealing with accessibility in terms of building design. It needs to be a priority, especially for public access buildings and new residential homes. As support workers Gold Coast, a lot of what we do is for the sake of helping disabled people to have the support they need within the wider community.
When trying to build a home for less, one of the most common things for people to do is try to cut costs by not making homes accessible for people with disabilities, and this is something that simply cannot be allowed to continue. Instead, it’s very important that we try and actively pursue different avenues of disability, support and work together to make sure that as many buildings as possible are redesigned to be accessible.
We’re not saying it’s an instant process, and we’re also not saying that it’s not a difficult one from time to time. However, what we are saying is that we need to be thinking about accessibility whenever new homes are designed and approved, and public access buildings are renovated to be suitable for modern usage.
Disabled people are just as entitled to accessible spaces as the rest of us. We have to build new homes and public buildings that are available for everybody, especially those who struggle with a disability. It’s definitely a long road to get to inclusivity, but it needs to be a priority. Most councils and local authorities have the situation well in hand, but those who are struggling need to be given help to make these changes because ultimately, making disability-friendly homes and public spaces is a key part of any successful forward-thinking city or town.
